Oxycontin: Uses, Taking, Side Effects, Warnings

what is oxycontin

The effectiveness of oxycodone and Oxycontin depends on what a doctor has prescribed the medicine for. For people with chronic, severe pain, that lasts all day, Oxycontin may be preferred because with twice-daily dosing its effects can last for 24 hours. For people with acute pain, such as that following surgery or trauma, oxycodone is preferred, because it works quickly and is available in combination with other pain-relieving medicines, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. OXYCONTIN has been evaluated in an open-label clinical trial of 155 opioid-tolerant pediatric patients with moderate to severe chronic pain. The mean duration of therapy was 20.7 days (range 1 to 43 days). The starting total daily doses ranged from 20 mg to 100 mg based on the patient’s prior opioid dose.

Overdose Information for Oxycontin

In addition, abuse of opioids can occur in the absence of addiction. The risk of serious side effects (such as slow/shallow breathing, severe drowsiness/dizziness) may be increased if this medication is taken with other products that may also cause drowsiness or breathing problems. OxyContin is an opioid (narcotic) pain medication used to relieve severe ongoing pain that is not controlled by other pain treatments. OxyContin contains oxycodone, a strong pain reliever that helps reduce pain by activating opioid receptors in the nervous system. OxyContin is an extended-release tablet that is taken every 12 hours regularly, it is not for occasional use or to be taken “as needed” for pain.

Medical Professionals

Extended-release products should not be used for as-needed pain relief. Oxycodone comes as a regular solution (liquid) and as a concentrated solution that contains more oxycodone in each milliliter of solution. Be sure that you know whether your doctor has prescribed the regular or concentrated solution and the dose in milliliters that your doctor has prescribed.

What other drugs will affect OxyContin?

Note that this list is not all-inclusive and includes only common medications that may interact with OxyContin. You should refer to the prescribing information for OxyContin for a complete list of interactions. Never use this medicine in larger amounts or for longer than prescribed. Tell your doctor if you feel an increased urge to take more of this medicine.

Side Effects

Talk to your doctor about how you are feeling during your treatment with oxycodone. Tell your doctor if you feel that your pain is not controlled or if your pain increases, becomes worse, or if you have new pain or an increased sensitivity to pain during your treatment with oxycodone. Do not take more of it or take it more how addictive is oxycontin often than prescribed by your doctor. Store oxycodone in a safe place so that no one else can take it accidentally or on purpose. Be especially careful to keep oxycodone out of the reach of children. Keep track of how many tablets or capsules, or how much liquid is left so you will know if any medication is missing.

  • If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible.
  • In controlled pharmacokinetic studies in elderly subjects (greater than 65 years) the clearance of oxycodone was slightly reduced.
  • There are many different types of pain that affect people in different ways.
  • These effects could be more pronounced with concomitant use of OXYCONTIN and CYP2D6 and CYP3A4 inhibitors, particularly when an inhibitor is added after a stable dose of OXYCONTIN is achieved [see WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS].
  • Because of these risks, reserve concomitant prescribing of these drugs for use in patients for whom alternative treatment options are inadequate.

60 mg tablets also contain polysorbate 80, red iron oxide and black iron oxide. 30 mg tablets also contain polysorbate 80, red iron oxide, yellow iron oxide, and black iron oxide. 20 mg tablets also contain polysorbate 80 and red iron oxide. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how oxycodone will affect you. Never crush or break an OxyContin tablet to inhale the powder or mix it into a liquid to inject the drug into your vein.

  • Specific instructions depend on your healthcare provider, but, according to the manufacturer, one tablet every 12 hours (twice daily) is recommended.
  • Advise patients and caregivers that when medicines are no longer needed, they should be disposed of promptly.
  • It is not known whether these effects on fertility are reversible [see Use In Specific Populations].
  • However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule.

Oxycodone may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms, are severe or do not go away:

  • You may experience serious or life threatening side effects if you take an oxycodone solution with a different concentration or if you take a different amount of medication than prescribed by your doctor.
  • Consider prescribing naloxone, based on the patient’s risk factors for overdose, such as concomitant use of CNS depressants, a history of opioid use disorder, or prior opioid overdose.
  • The choice between these two drugs depends on your condition and the reason for your treatment such as the type of pain you’re experiencing.
  • 30 mg tablets also contain polysorbate 80, red iron oxide, yellow iron oxide, and black iron oxide.
